Wellington SQL Server User Group

The Wellington SQL Server User Group is a community user group that strives to promote networking and professional interaction to help the SQL Professional get the most out of Microsoft SQL Server, and to strengthen the profile of SQL Server in the Wellington IT Industry. There is a large community of both developers and IT Professionals using SQL Server that stands to benefit from more regular and accessible activities in Wellington.

The group usually meets at 4pm on the second or third Wednesday of the month but this may change from time to time, so please check details for confirmation.

Membership, meetings and presentations and food/drink are free unless advised otherwise. To join, click on the "Register" link under login on this page, and enter your details. Any enquiries can be sent to wellingtonssug@gmail.com.

If you think any of our sessions might be of interest to a friend or colleague, feel free to bring them along with you - they don't have to be a member of the group to attend. Just make sure you let us know so we can cater for them too.

Database on a Diet (taming a large database)

Greg Low, CEO and Principal Mentor SQL Down Under

Greg regularly works with tier-one financial organisations and they all struggle with the size of their databases. It's easy for the size to get out of control. In this session, Greg will describe the techniques he used to reduce an operating 3.6TB database to just over 500GB, while increasing its performance. The session will include a deep dive into compression techniques within SQL Server.

About Greg:
Greg is well known in the SQL Server community as a mentor, trainer, author, and community leader. He is a certified master for SQL Server, was an instructor in that program, and holds a PhD in Computer Science. Microsoft regularly call on Greg to develop data-related content, and to train their own staff. He regularly speaks at tier-one conferences internationally. Greg is best known for his SQL Down Under podcast, SDU Tools, and his eBooks and whitepapers. He heads up a boutique consultancy called SQL Down Under in Melbourne Australia. Greg has been awarded as an MVP since 2001.
